Do you have to repair or replace your office furniture?
It is a fact of office life: even the best constructed, most sustainable office furniture will eventually break down and fall into disrepair. The question for office managers is when they have to try to repair what is broken, and when they have to stop and completely remove the old things. Here are some of the most common problems for every office furniture, how to repair it and when it throw away and start all over again.
Desk
Repair of office furniture: Offices are the cornerstone of the office. So no wonder that so much can go wrong with them. Some repairs - such as sticky drawers or small cosmetic work - are simple enough to do yourself. With a little WD-40 and/or paint you can go a long way. Ditto missing parts. Do not assume that a lost key, for example, or even a broken LA, means that you have to write off the whole piece. It is always worth contacting the manufacturer to see if replacement parts are available.
Throw it away as: Most of today are made of plastic parts, even the parts that look like wood or metal. If the veneer leafs, consider exchanging completely for a new piece of furniture. And don't bother to paint those plastic parts. It will not last - or fool someone.
Office furniture repair: Oh, internet, is there something you can't do? In terms of do-it-yourself instructions, we recommend not. This great list contains just about everything that can go wrong with your ergonomic chair, plus instructions to repair it yourself with no more than a few different keys and some free time.
Throw it away as: sometimes the problem is not as simple as a missing bolt or a separate screw. If the backrest or seat of mesh is torn or frayed, or if the seat is full of holes, repairing your ergonomic chair can cost more effort than it is worth.
Archive cabinets
Repair of office furniture: true story: there was once a work neighbor who complained that his archive cabinet was broken. It was quite new, which was a source of his annoyance. The other was of course that his files were held hostage in the stuck La.
He called maintenance angry and demanded both the release of his files and a brand new archive cabinet. They thought - you guessed it - a can of WD -40, and reached the first while they denied the necessity of the latter. Our colleague spent a large part of the rest of the day wishes that he could crawl into his archive cabinet and hide.
Another simple do-it-yourself project: repeat a dingy cupboard.
Throw it away if: if it is rusty, dented and is no longer easy to use, or if the drawers no longer connect to their rails, it is probably not worth the repair. You better donate or recycle it and buy something new. (Or new for you.)
And if we are talking about 'new for you', if you decide that your office furniture repairs are beyond your skill level (or interest), do not assume that you are stuck with paying the full price for brand new office furniture.
